"Hi Ho, Hi Ho, It's Off to the
Salt Mines We Go"

Scented Bath Salts

When you get home from a long day in the salt mines, there is nothing more relaxing than a deliciously hot cup of tea and a wonderfully warm bath.  Except if the bath is treated with scented bath salts.  And these decadent salts are so easy to make, you'll wonder why you didn't try them before now!

Materials
Coarse sea salt (found at grocery store)
Food coloring
Essential oil (found at craft store)
Large plastic resealable food storage bag (one gallon size)
Scissors
Decorative glass jar
Cork or Styrofoam
Ribbon (optional)
Silk flowers or other decoration (optional)

1)  To begin, measure the amount of sea salt you will need by filling up the decorative glass jar.

2)  Next, pour the salt into a large plastic resealable food storage bag.

3)  Working with a drop or two at a time, add the food coloring of your choice to the salt.  After each drop(s), seal the plastic bag and knead the salt to distribute the color.  Continue to add color a drop(s) at a time until you have the color intensity you like.

4)  Next, add about a dozen drops of essential oil per cup of salt to the bag.  Lavender, rose and eucalyptus oils are very popular, but you can try others like jasmine, lemon and peppermint to name a few.  Or you can mix two or more together to create your own unique aroma.  Seal the bag and knead the salt to mix in the oil.

5)  Cut off one corner of the bag, making a small hole.  Use the bag as a funnel to pour the scented salt into the jar.

6)  Seal the jar with its lid (if it has one) or purchase a cork to fit.  If you cannot find a cork, you can make your own stopper out of thick Styrofoam.  Press the foam down onto the jar's opening to create an outline.  Using a serrated knife, cut out the Styrofoam for a perfectly fitted stopper.

7)  If the jar is not already decorated when you purchase it (like the one in the photo), you can tie a ribbon around it and add a sprig of silk flowers or any other decoration like a seashell, a cluster of faux pearls or even a pretty tassel.

And there you have it.  No muss, no fuss.  And no clean-up!  Just throw away the plastic bag and you're finished.  Make up a jar to give to a friend and let them luxuriate in a spa-like bath.  You can even put together a "spa basket" and include along with your custom made bath salts a selection of flavored tea bags and a pretty mug.

Now draw yourself a warm bath, sprinkle your new scented salts into the tub and soak away your worries of the day.
