"It's In the Cards"

Re-covering a Card Table

If you have one of those old, square card tables whose legs fold up under it and the vinyl top is torn and stained, don't despair.  It's a snap to re-cover it!  They're great for extra table space for your afternoon tea buffet or a separate children's table at an adult tea party.

Materials

Card Table
Vinyl
Felt
Screwdriver
Hot Glue Gun
Scissors

1)  Turn over the table and open the legs so they are facing up.  (This project is best done on the floor.)  With the screwdriver, remove the screws from the metal clips that hold the top to the leg base.

2)  You should have 4-8 metal clips unscrewed from the top.  Lift off the leg base.

3)  Turn the top right side up and cut a piece of felt to fit, leaving a 1/4" border around the edges.

4)  Using the hot glue gun, glue the felt to the table top just around the edges.

5)  Lay the vinyl out right side down,  Center the table top on top of the vinyl and cut it to fit so that the vinyl will wrap over the edges of the table top about 1/2".

6)  Using the hot glue gun and beginning on one edge of the vinyl, wrap the vinyl around to the back of the table top and glue the edge into place.  Continue on the opposite edge, gluing the vinyl to the back side of the table top and pulling the vinyl taut as you go.  Complete the process on the last remaining two edges and pleating the corners as you work your way around.

7)  Place the leg base onto the back of the table top and screw the clips back into place.

8)  Turn the table over, and you have a virtually brand new card table.

If the paint on the metal leg base is scratched or chipped, you can spray paint the legs to match the new vinyl top.  And for very little money, you have recycled a worn out relic into a new and very usable piece of furniture.  So go ahead and invite your friends over for afternoon tea!  You'll have plenty of room to entertain!
