                         "It's a Wrap"

You’ve decided to host an Afternoon Tea party, and you’re busy decorating your tea table for the event. Well, don’t forget to adorn your chairs as well. These important elements in your dining room are usually forgotten when you are setting out your best china, silverware and table covers for your special soiree. But, they can make a real statement if you properly "dress" them for the occasion. We have several ideas for preening and primping your dining chairs that will delight your guests’ eyes even before they see the special Afternoon Tea spread that you have set out.

A fun chair embellishment, that would work well for a New Years tea, would be to tie a brightly colored whimsical scarf around the chair back. Then, tie a cluster of glass Christmas tree ornaments together and attach it to the center of the scarf. Let the scarf ends drape down from the cluster. It’s easy, fun, and you can select scarves and ornaments to match the color of your table scape.
This beautiful hand-knit scarf was made especially for High-SocieTea by Arlene LeClair of Atlanta, Georgia.

Valentine’s Day is a wonderfully special day to celebrate by hosting an Afternoon Tea party. It can be a romantic tete-e-tete for two, or an amusing get together with your single friends to celebrate the "day of love." To decorate your chair backs for this themed tea party, tie a length of white lace around the chair and wrap one end over the other like an ascot. Tuck in a spray of red roses (real or artificial), and add a couple of sparkly red hearts (mounted on dowels) for that special touch of bling!

Another great celebration is Mardi Gras, and you can invite your friends over for a costumed Afternoon Tea. To adorn your chairs in a fitting style, you can use the same white lace tied in ascot form, and tuck a lavishly decorated mask into the fold of the fabric. These masks are easy to make yourself, and can be decorated with everything from glitter and rhinestones to beads and feathers. You can even offer these masks as party favors to your guests. What a wonderful way for them to remember the event!

For a very elegant Afternoon Tea party, perhaps to celebrate an engagement or special birthday, we have decorated our chair with a black feathered fan tucked into a length of silver satin that we tied and draped down the back. For added glamor, we clipped a sparkly black and silver butterfly to the satin. These decorations, and many others, can be found at your local craft stores.

Here’s an idea for an Afternoon Tea party to celebrate an upcoming wedding. This chair wrap is all in white and gold. We used white satin wired ribbon with gold checkerboard striping along with a gold cord tipped with gold tassels. Simply tie both around the chair, creating a large bow with the ribbon and streamers with the cording. We’ve added a pearl encrusted pear with a white satiny tassel in the center to complete the "wedding white" theme.

There’s another pretty way to use that same pearl encrusted pear. Attach it to the top corner of your chair back and add a pretty wired ribbon bow. Depending on the color of the bow you select, you can use this decorating idea for Christmas or Easter or even Thanksgiving.

Finally, hosting an authentic Victorian Tea Party would be a wonderful way to while away an afternoon. You can dress your dining chairs in style with a length of white lace, again tied in an ascot style, and pinned with an antique brooch. We used a Victorian looking cameo pin here, keeping with the theme of the party. You can ask your guests to dress in their prettiest party dresses and fancy hats, and socialize in style.
