New Book tells the story of two lovers who struggle to survive in the early 20th century in England.
An engaging story of life, prejudice and social inequality is found in A Case of Tea, a compelling new fictional book authored by Sylvia Douet.

The text tells the story of Ernie Blackman, who became a coach driver just before the turn of the century in the late 1800’s. He meets a beautiful woman named Kathryn Higgins and soon enough they fall in love with each other. With the influx of trains, Ernie takes a job at a hotel while Kathryn finds work at a match factory where many of its workers are striking. The relationship becomes problematic when John Osborne, a businessman with a shocking past, accuses Ernie of theft. Stolen diamonds from India surface in England. This sparks a court case involving a young man, his fiancée and a young Indian woman who arrives to claim her rights. Is this the end for Ernie and Kathryn? Only time can tell.

Dramatically told, A Case of Tea takes a close look at relationships in the late 1800’s and the early 1900’s. It reveals the lives of people who experience extreme poverty and others who struggle to survive in the harsh environment of London, contradicting the lifestyles of the rich and powerful. It also emphasizes the everlasting struggle for civil rights, gender fairness and gaining a better life. A surprise ending is waiting to be discovered.

Sylvia Douet is a Canadian who was born in England. Her early life was spent as a nurse and a mother of four, but after a remarriage and retirement, her first story was published as part of a genealogy anthology, called Bygone Days, Fondly Remembered. Her research into family history led to her story A Case of Tea, where she has used her English grandparents lives as a jumping-off board for the rest of the tale.

                  CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

John Osborne was far too excited to return to his office, after meeting his father. It was a good mile to his house, but he decided to walk, partly for exercise, but also to help to release some of the excitement, which was bubbling up inside him. He arrived home just as Jasmine was about to go out for a walk herself. He sprang up the front steps, threw the door open, and surprised her in the front hall.

"Jasmine, My darling" he cried, grasping her in his arms, and twirling her around. "The world is wonderful, don’t you think!"

Jasmine laughed, not understanding his mood, she asked what was so wonderful to create this exhilaration.

"You are talking to the heir to Sir Reginald Powers, my darling. All our worries are over."

"John, my dear. Do be sensible. What are you talking about?"

John took her by the arm "I’m so glad you have your bonnet on. Let’s go for a walk together."

Jasmine was pleased but also puzzled. She wore a plum coloured dress, with a small fur cape over her shoulders to keep out the cold, and a matching hat, which suited her dress perfectly, in a slightly paler tone. Her daintily laced up boots were ready for walking, and John felt she had never looked more beautiful.

"Let’s go to the park, and we’ll walk and talk, and I‘ll tell you why I am so excited."

They walked to the end of the street and entered the parkette. While they walked John told Jasmine about his meeting with Sir Reginald. The blackmail and the final resolution.

"John! How terrible for you. I’d no idea that this was happening. You must have thought me very selfish, not to have realised."

"I knew how worried you were about your mother. It’s been a very trying time all round. I’m so glad she’s better. We can all relax again. Jasmine. There is just one request now, and we don’t have much time, but Sir Reginald would like to meet you and Joslyn. He never had children by his marriage, and he’s rather lonely, so he’d like to meet his granddaughter."

"Perhaps we can arrange a party for him for next week, when mother is well enough for visitors." Jasmine had been amazed at John’s revelation, but she took it very calmly.

"I’m sorry my dear, but I invited him to visit us today. He’s to arrive at five o’clock so that he can meet Joslyn before she goes to bed."

Fortunately for John, Jasmine was of a nature that didn’t get as excited as he did. "Well my sweet husband, I suggest we stop visiting in the park, so that I can go home and have everything ready for his arrival." She couldn’t help smiling at him, knowing what a struggle life had been for him. This news was wonderful. Jasmine couldn’t help feeling some of his excitement.
