“I see you don’t exaggerate,” he confirmed. “I increased the price by ten thousand. There’s no question the stallion is worth every penny.” He hesitated before giving her the check, studying her face. Her eyes were as blue as the Caribbean Sea, he thought, and in a different situation he might have pursued her. But he wasn’t about to mix pleasure with a deal as important as this one. Even so, he had realized from their first conversation she was different from many of the women he had known, motivated by something other than her own self-interest. When they had first talked, she had been more concerned about the welfare of her horse, than about negotiating the price of the sale.
She had seemed somewhat desperate during their second conversation and he had taken advantage of it, he reflected, as he was now. Should he disclose to her the stallion’s brilliant lineage, that he might be the most talented descendant of Conquistador? Let her realize what she was giving up? No, not until it had to come out. I finally have the chance, Abuelo, he thought to himself, as he looked over at his grandfather’s portrait. And I’m not letting anything stand in the way of a Grand National Championship, like you would have wanted.
Cami wondered what he was thinking as he handed her the check. The brief moment seemed like an eternity as she looked back at him. It was Antonio who finally broke the silence when he slid some papers across the desk for her to sign.
“This is a standard contract,” he explained. “After the sale, I’ll see that the stallion’s papers are transferred.”
When she reached for the pen their hands touched and she jumped at the contact. Under different circumstances, she couldn’t help thinking . . . but that would never be. “He will be well cared for . . .” she started to speak, trying to keep her handsteady as she signed each page. She willed herself to hold on as he thanked her for the sale. But she knew she was losing ground. Overwhelmed, she rushed out of the office. She reached her truck in record time and pulled out of the driveway as quickly as her rig would allow, never looking back. Once again, she wondered what she would ever do without Tesoro.
Antonio felt a momentary stab of regret as he watched Cami leave his office. Even so, fate had seemed to intervene, he thought, to give him this chance. Determined to make the most of this unbelievable opportunity, he picked up the papers and went to find his brothers. They were standing by the stall, still admiring the stallion.
“We’ve got him,” Antonio said with a broad grin and held up the evidence. “Signed, sealed, and delivered. If I didn’t know differently, I’d swear I was looking at Conquistador. And I’ll be damned if Tesoro isn’t just as talented, another national champion.”
“This calls for a drink,” Angel replied, always ready for a party.
“Well, it better be a quick one,” Arturo shot back. “We’ve only got three months to train him before the national show
