                           CHAPTER 21

I'm Outta Here tried to take long strides, and Melody helped him as much as she could with her arms and feet pressing against his ribs. She caught one horse; she was in third place! They had gone approximately halfway through the long run-in of a little over a quarter of a mile, and she was closing in on the front two horses.
I'm Outta Here was at the flanks of the two front horses which were nose-to-nose. A hundred yards to go. Melody pushed down on I'm Outta Here's neck with as much force as she could. The horse took as large a stride as he could muster. His head was at the horses' shoulders. Fifty yards to go. Push out with the reins, gather them for another push, squeeze the horse's ribs with her boots. They were at the two horses' jaws. Twenty yards to go. I'm Outta Here lunged with every bit of reserve he had left, stretched his long body out, and crossed the finish line in front by a head.
The crowd roared. A girl had won the world's toughest horse race, coming from far behind to cinch the win right at the wire.
