CHAPTER FOURTEEN
It hadn’t occurred to Jim to ask the name of the patient who at this point was a total stranger. Just then the nurse who had gone to the lab for the next unit of blood returned and as per protocol, rechecked the patient’s name, medical record number with a second nurse. When Jim heard what he thought was Astrid, he suddenly jerked up in complete surprise.
"What did you say?" he asked
"What?" the nurse looked confused.
"Her name? What’s her name?"
She looked down at the tag for verification, but not sure why it made a difference to him. "Astrid Olsen," she said.
Paul saw a look on Jim’s face that he didn’t ever recall seeing before. "What is it, Jim?" he asked puzzled by the reaction. They lived with crisis like this daily, why should this one be any different.
Jim was now studying the once beautiful face that was now so grotesquely unrecognizable. Along with the multiple cuts and bruises, the eyes appeared only as small slits in the surrounding discolored puffy flesh.
The picture of the vivacious woman laughing and clapping at the circus acts flashed in his mind. It just couldn’t be, but now that he looked at her frame, he knew without a doubt that it was she.
