                      "My Cookies are Ajar"

There is nothing sweeter than a homemade gift. And this Chocolate Chip and Mint Cookie Mix in a Jar is not only one of the easiest presents to make for someone, but one that is easy for the recipient to make as well. And when they bite into these yummy cookies, they’ll be at your doorstep with a plateful to give back to you!

Jar Ingredients:
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup M&M’s
1/2 cup peppermint candies,
    slightly crushed

Remaining Ingredients:
1/2 stick (1/4 cup) butter,
    softened
2 eggs, beaten
1-1/4 teaspoons vanilla

To make the Cookie in a Jar Gift, in a medium sized bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
Put the peppermint candies in a sealable food storage bag, seal the bag and using a heavy mallet or rolling pin, break up the candies into smaller pieces.

Layer the jar ingredients in a 1-quart food storage jar in the following order, tamping down each layer as you go along: granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour mixture, chocolate M&M’s and crushed peppermint candy. (The flat end of a mallet works well as a tamper.)
Seal the jar and decorate as you wish. You can cover the lid with a fabric circle and secure it in place with a pretty ribbon tied around the lid. You can attach a pretty little ceramic statue or some other decoration on top of the lid. Just make sure to attach a card with the baking directions on it.

To prepare the cookies for baking, preheat the oven to 350 degrees.  Line cookie sheets with parchment paper.

Empty the contents of the jar in a large bowl. Using fingers, work the butter into the flour mixture.

In a small bowl, combine the eggs and vanilla. Add the egg mixture to the flour mixture; stir until dough forms.

Shape the dough into 1" balls. Place the balls 3" apart on the prepared cookie sheets. Bake 10-12 minutes or until the cookies are golden. Cool for one minute on the cookie sheets. Slide the cookies and parchment paper onto wire racks. Finish cooling.

If you are the recipient of these Cookies in a Jar, whip up a batch, set out a plate of these heart warming treats on your Afternoon Tea table and serve them with a pot of Bigelow’s Plantation Mint tea. There will be no better way to say "Thank You" for such a delightful gift.
