"Where the Art and Elegance of Taking Tea is Treasured"
You will need a 1-quart food storage jar for this recipe. Layer the ingredients in the jar in this order, tamping down each layer as you go: brown sugar, chicken gravy mix, dry milk and whole wheat flour. (The flat end of a mallet works well as a tamper. We are using the flat-topped handle of an ice pick here.)
Jar Ingredients:
"Canine Confections"
Dog Treat Mix in a Jar
3 tablespoons brown sugar
1 package dry chicken
gravy mix
1 cup nonfat dry milk
3 cups whole wheat flour
Remaining Ingredients:
1 large egg
2/3 cup vegetable oil
1 cup warm water
Seal the jar with the lid. You can decorate the jar any way you like. A cute dog-themed fabric, like the one shown here which is white fabric stamped with black paw prints, fits the theme of these treats perfectly. Tie down the fabric with a colorful ribbon. Y
ou can add a dog bone-shaped cookie cutter along with the baking directions written or typed onto a card. You can even top the jar with a pretty little ceramic dog. However you decorate it, the dog lover who receives this gift will be delighted!
To prepare the treats for baking, preheat oven to 300 degrees. Empty the contents of the jar into a large bowl. Stir the ingredients to blend well. Add the egg, oil and water and stir together to form a soft dough.
Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for a few minutes. Using a floured rolling pin, roll out the dough to 1/4" thickness. Using a cookie cutter (the dog bone-shaped cutter would be perfect), cut out the treats and place them 1" apart on ungreased cookie sheets.
Bake for 20 minutes; turn the cookies over and continue baking for another 10 minutes, until lightly browned on both sides. Allow to cool completely on the baking sheets. Store in an airtight container.
